Black sand beach
Next stop on tour was the Black sand beach, via a Macadamia farm (where we bought some chocolate coated macadamias) . Some 20 or 30 years ago there was a very big eruption causing lava to flow at least 300 metres wide & head for the ocean
New coconut palms sprouting up everywhere
Look how black the sand is & the flow was 20 metres thick when it hit the ocean
Lava rock. Legend has it, that if you remove a rock you will upset the Pele Goddess of the mountain & you will have loads of bad Karma.
Some native Hawaiian families trace their lineage to Pelehonuamea, a woman deified because of her power over volcanic eruptions & lava flows. Today Pele resides in Halema'uma'u.
It is also said that the National parks office receives many parcels back via post returning stolen stones!!!
